Screens lie about colour, and so does a shade card in a showroom. Ask your partner for sample patches on the actual wall and look at them at night as well as in daylight — it is free and it is the only reliable test.

Finishes
Sheen is not a style choice
The more it shines, the tougher it is and the more it shows. Everything else follows from that one sentence.
Matt
Ceilings, adult bedrooms
No reflection. Hides an uneven wall better than anything else, and colours read deeper. Marks if you touch it.
Soft sheen
Living rooms, most bedrooms
The sensible default for an Indian home. Wipes clean, takes normal wear, forgiving on imperfect plaster.
Satin
Kitchens, hallways, kids' rooms
Properly washable. Shows a wavy wall, so choosing it is also a decision to level the plaster.
Gloss & enamel
Doors, frames, grills, gates
Hard-wearing and utterly unforgiving. Which is why a good door is mostly preparation.
The same shade looks lighter and flatter in matt, deeper and more saturated in satin. If you approve a colour on a matt card and order it in satin, you have not chosen the colour you think you have.
Room by room
Where each family tends to work
Starting points, not rules. Your partner will bring samples and argue with you about them, which is the point of them coming.
Living room
One warm wall against three neutrals reads as considered. Four warm walls read as a restaurant.
Bedroom
Go a shade deeper than feels right on the card. Bedrooms are seen mostly in low light.
Kitchen
Whatever the colour, pick a satin finish. Grease decides this one, not taste.
Study or home office
Deep colours behind a screen reduce glare and make a small room feel enclosed rather than cramped.
Pooja room
Warm whites and golds with a light that is warmer than the rest of the house.
Exterior
Exteriors fade one to two shades in Delhi NCR sun. Choose slightly deeper than you want to end up.
